The Good Wood

Wood siding is a common exterior product used all around the region, especially on more contemporary homes and businesses. A major downside to using wood siding is maintenance. Most wood siding products require re-staining and re-sealing every few years to prevent rot. Wood products that typically last longer are usually more expensive due to the manufacturing of high quality plastics.

Shou Sugi Ban (Charred Wood Siding)

Allow us to introduce you to Shou Sugi Ban wood siding. Shou Sugi Ban is an ancient Japanese technique for preserving wood by burning it. The charred exterior of the wood acts as a barrier from moisture, insects, and is also fire resistant. Simply char the wood prior to install, seal it with your favorite wood sealer, and place it over furring and weather barriers. There is a great deal of information out there about the process. Check out the youtube link below.

Shou Sugi Ban is also sold pre-charred. Rather than charring the wood on site the charring process is done in the factory and shipped to your home. There seems to be quite the buzz for the product and therefore it can be rather expensive as the product is currently in high demand. Shop around if this is your best option, in our cost research we have found drastic differences in pricing between different companies.
